Developing Sydney: capturing change 1900-1920 2020
From wherever you are- we invite you to explore the streets of Sydney in the early 20th century through a virtual tour. This exhibition showcases photographs commissioned by Sydney Municipal Council from 1900 to 1920.The City Building Surveyor's Department used photography to document the city's profound transformation in the first 2 decades of the 20th century. These photographs inadvertently capture the largely working class neighbourhoods and people being displaced by commercial and government redevelopment. The City Building Surveyor's Condemnation and Demolition Books is a key photographic collection held in the City Archives comprising almost 5000 photographs and associated glass plate negatives. To explore the City of Sydney's Archives and History resources go to archives.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.auCurator Laila Ellmoos

Bystander intervention workshops to stop Covid-19 racism 2020
The racialised narrative surrounding Covid-19 has sparked a surge in racial abuse targeting People of Colour.Whether it's a new poll finding almost one third of Australians blame the Chinese community for the pandemic. Or a study by the Migrant Worker Justice Initiative revealing a quarter of Australia's international students faced racial abuse during the pandemic. Or an Asian Australian Alliance survey collecting more than 500 stories from People of Colour of coronavirus-related racial abuse within a few months.People of Colour are experiencing a surge of racially motivated attacks. That's why we're launching regular bystander intervention workshops to empower allies to effectively and safely intervene when they see racial abuse. These free three hour interactive online workshops will cover:The types of racial abuse People of Colour are facing in this momentThe positive impact of bystander interventionEvidence-based bystander intervention methodology to safely interrupt racial abuseAnd space to practically roleplay scenarios in a safe environmentParticipants will leave with the tools- strategies and confidence to safely support someone experiencing discrimination. These workshops are free and open to anyone (although we particularly encourage people who identify as allies to attend) so please share with your family- friends & networks. Special thanks to the City of Sydney whose generous support has made these workshops possible.

Dying2Learn is an online course that aims to enable Australians to be more comfortable talking about death and dying and more prepared to engage with issues arising at the end of life. The free course runs from 5 October to 2 November 2020 and is open to everyone in the community.Dying2Learn is designed to enable participants to learn supportively and contribute to discussions. It is run by the CareSearch Project based at Flinders University with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health.Save a spot and find out more.
