Reimagining resilience for young people 2020
This is a fun online course that is suitable for every body. From the comfort of your home- you will be facilitated through a range of improvisation exercises designed to give your brain a work-out and build present moment awareness. You will also be guided through a combination of mindfulness practices including yoga- meditation and breathing.The idea is to give you a variety of different skills to manage stress- reduce anxiety and most importantly- have fun! Each week will have a different theme- and a variety of creative ways for you to find more ease and joy in your day to day life at home. You will be working with two facilitators- Natascha and Laura.Natascha Flowers is a qualified yoga teacher- social worker- trauma counsellor and actor. Natascha has facilitated a range of creative- movement-based and mental health groups. As a social worker and counsellor- Natascha has worked with people experiencing homelessness- refugees and asylum seekers- people with disabilities- people impacted by eating and body image concerns and survivors of child abuse and complex trauma. She teaches yoga regularly- and has completed training in teaching yoga for trauma- mental health and body image- as well as accessible- body positive yoga. Natascha offers a warm- inclusive and encouraging approach to everyone she works with. She is committed to creating a supportive and safe space in all her work.Laura Hart is a qualified mental health first aider. She has been performing for over fifteen years. She has worked creatively with not for profit organisations such as Camp Quality- The Starlight Children's Foundation- Ted Noffs and Milkcrate Theatre. Laura is a 2017 Young Social Pioneer with the Foundation for Young Australians - developing and sharing her improv comedy program for people with anxiety. Laura has trained at Improv Theatre Sydney- Impro Australia and the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Communications from Charles Sturt University with a major in Theatre and Media. Laura is particularly interested in how improvisation and mental wellbeing intersect. She sees humour as a tool to build resilience- and uses improv as a mindfulness practice. Laura is a member of the ITS faculty and ensemble- and the company's Outreach- Diversity & Inclusion Officer.This workshop is supported by the Foundation for Young Australians. Participants must be aged between 18 - 30.

In February 2020- the City released a new catalogue which provides unprecedented access to the archival collection. Fight the fear and learn how comedians make one of the scariest pursuits look so effortless. Equip yourself with the tools required to crack up your audience- experiment with styles and techniques and discover the tricks and secrets behind the performance to transform yourself to be the funniest you can be. You will write your own material and learn how to deliver it.This online course will have a stronger focus on writing- developing material- experimenting with styles and discovering your voice. Students will be encouraged to also make time for writing in their own time to get the most from their class experience. Classes will consist of online meetings where we can do live exercises- learn about new comedy styles- and share material at our digital open mic.Marcel Blanch- de Wilt is a stand-up comedian and improviser. The Adventures of the 'Waltzing Matilda' 2020
David Carment discusses the adventurous and dangerous flight of 'Waltzing Matilda'- a converted Halifax bomber that reached Sydney from Britain in June 1946. On board were men- women and children who all wished to travel to Australia as quickly as possible at a time when commercial transportation links for civilians were almost non-existent. It was perhaps the most unusual flight made along the Britain-Australia air highway.About the speakerDavid Carment AM is Emeritus Professor of History at Charles Darwin University- an Australian Dictionary of Biography Editorial Fellow at the Australian National University and the author of many historical publications. Active over a long period in community history organisations- he is a former President of the RAHS.
