Balance is a ceramics exhibition by Shannon Lewis. The pieces presented consider the markers we use to describe the work that so many of us are compelled to produce - markers such as artist and artisan; functional and ornamental; design and being.
The pieces experiment with the territory between these markers, particularly for three-dimensional work. They illustrate the choices made to design well-crafted and beautiful objects and to allow each piece to develop and come into being according to an instinctive compulsion to work with materials and create in a way that feels right. Most of the pieces in this exhibition leave the clay unglazed, allowing the natural texture of the clay to decorate and the forms to engage and surprise.
