BHP started building ships in Whyalla in 1939, in a relatively short time - until 1978, the shipyards produced not just the very first warships ever built in South Australia but also some of the largest ships in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. The industrial activity brought in a huge change in demographics, emigration, social development and economic boom.
This temporary exhibition is on display in the Whyalla Maritime Museum as part of South Australia's History Festival.
