Steeped in history and tradition, the Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is considered by the yachting fraternity and the general public to be one of Australia's flagship ocean yacht races. First held in 1949, the race is an officially recognised icon of Queensland and the highest profile Easter Weekend sporting event, setting sail from Moreton Bay on Good Friday annually. From the start, yachts proceed via a mark off Redcliffe Point to the North-West Channel up to Caloundra and through to Gladstone, a distance of approximately 308 nautical miles.
Many of the best sailing yachts and crews will enter from across Queensland, New South Wales. Victoria and Tasmania as well as entrants from overseas. They compete for the highly coveted The Courier-Mail Cup, one of the oldest perpetual sailing trophies in Australia.
The race is adored by land and water spectators both at the start and finish. On Good Friday, the Moreton Bay foreshores are lined with spectators or those who attend two festivals celebrating the race start - the Festival of Sails (Redcliffe) and the Bluewater Festival (Sandgate). While on water near the race start, around 300 private and commercial vessels gather around the start line with water spectators. The race finish is celebrated in Gladstone with the Gladstone Harbour Festival.
