Join Professor Richard de Grijs - author, prolific public speaker on astronomy, astrophysics and maritime history, professor of astrophysics at Macquarie University and Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute—Beijing.
Richard will take you on a historical detective quest, on the trail of astronomer William Dawes, from his arrival in 1788 as shipboard astronomer on the First Fleet to his connection with the 1932 construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Dawes established two observatories within a kilometre of Sydney's present-day city centre. Professor de Grijs can be found most Sundays on the historic vessels of the Australian National Maritime Museum, where he is a as volunteer guide and deck hand, and he recently published the first detailed biography of William Dawes.
