When Edgar Allan Poe, his wife, Virginia, and her mother moved into the cottage in 1846, the area was not yet a part of the Bronx. It was a suburb of Manhattan, and it would not be a part of New York City proper until closer to 1900. Virginia died in the house in 1847, which likely contributed to Poe's mood reflected in his works from the time. This exhibition explores Poe's life and creative output from 1846 to 1849, when he wrote famous works such as “Annabel Lee” and “The Cask of Amontillado.”
