Embedded 2020 has been developed for exhibition at Flux Gallery Perth following the success of its debut at Noir Gallery, Melbourne in 2019. In celebration of International Women's Day 2020 and of all women, this bold initiative presents nine personal interpretations of the domestic quilt.
Under the curatorship of Sandra Murray, two WA artists, Claire Bushby and Molly Werner, have created new works that are displayed alongside the original seven Embedded artists who are from NSW, Victoria and WA: Ruby Armstrong-Porter, Olga Cironis, Michele Elliot, Nikita Dunovits-Ferrier, Tania Ferrier, E Anne Jeppe and Pam Kleeman-Passi.
The nine artworks are not traditional or conventional quilts. The artists unpick and re-stitch the quilt's meaning to reveal their very personal stories and politics about the bed and what embeds them in it - the quilt. The conversations around these quilts range from feminist, frivolous to fraught with difficulty. A diverse range of materials have been embodied within these quilts: hair and underwear; t-shirts and satin dresses; disused blankets and tea-stained silk. This is a stimulating array of works that even includes a funky teenage bedroom setting complete with TV and shag pile rug.
Two unique workshops: Angry Underwear with Tania Ferrier and Pam Kleeman-Passi, and a T-shirt design workshop led by Nikita Dunovits-Ferrier will be held on Sunday March 1 at the gallery. A catalogue of the exhibition will be available in the gallery.
Flux Gallery is Accessible through the King Street entrance.
