Born in Brisbane 1950, Paul attended the Brisbane College of Art and worked in the fashion industry for ten years before becoming a full-time artist in 1980. His work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections in Australia, the USA, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, the UK, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
Paintings
In acrylics on linen, Paul paints a variety of subjects from beaches and sunsets to mountains and riverbanks. Paul often draws on the power and beauty of the natural world for inspiration. As such, he portrays his subjects with close realism while allowing the emotion and essence of place to shine through.
Paul skillfully and patiently builds up his works by careful observation of colour, tone and form. In his beach paintings the movement of water is a key focus, with his considered compositions leading the eye through the shallow water to the incoming waves. Paul effortlessly captures bouncing, shimmering light and glistening sand in dynamic works that are beautifully balanced.
It is the familiarity of Paul Evans' subjects that strikes a chord with many viewers. His works recall memories of days spent at the beach or walking through mountain forests, and imbue a sense of wonder at Australia's spectacular wilderness.
'Painting for me is trying to capture a moment, that moment when the shadows engulf a cliff face, waves hit the beach, mountains shrouded in mist or when a flock of galahs flash through a landscape and are gone. To me these are moments of magic.' - Paul Evans
Drawings
Paul Evans' drawings are created through a wildly time-consuming technique, in which an image is drawn dot by dot with a technical pen and ink on paper. The resulting images are produced almost entirely from dots. The dots are strategically placed to suggest forms, shapes, contrast and depth. The denser the dots, the darker the apparent shade. It is left to the viewer's eye to complete the picture, a proposition which seldom fails, as you can see in the finished drawings.
