Farm volunteers help with the growing and development of the farm site in Sydney Park at St Peters. Shifts are for 1 ½ or 2 hours and are a great opportunity to get involved with Sydney City Farm and meet others in your community.
All produce is grown communally and donated to local charities for distribution to people in need.
No experience is needed. Just bring a can-do attitude and we will show you everything you need to know. Please wear clothes that can get a little dirty and covered with sturdy flat shoes. Bring a water bottle and hat.
Bookings essential. No group bookings, please.
The session will not proceed in wet, extreme or dangerous weather.
Volunteer sessions focus on different farm tasks on different days of the week:
Thursday and Saturday mornings are spent working on general farm activities in our cropping area. Tasks can include watering, weeding, planting and harvesting. These sessions are great for new volunteers to complete their induction, do a tour and get a taste for volunteering at the farm.
Friday mornings involve working in the farm plant nursery and depot area. Tasks can include raising seedlings, collecting and processing seed, and caring for our small potted fruit trees. These sessions suit volunteers who want to develop plant propagation and nursery skills.
Saturday afternoons are for project work in the farm's floriculture, pollinator and agroforestry demonstration garden beds, and edible display gardens like the mini fruit forest and agricultural crops. Tasks can include soil improvement, new plantings or caring for existing plants . These sessions suit volunteers who want to help with development of the farm site.
We also have a Farm Hands Program for volunteers who are interested in joining a small team and working regularly at the farm outside of the formal volunteer sessions. To find out more or register your interest please email us cityfarm@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
