There were 162,000 convicts transported to the Australian colonies between 1788 and 1868. Of these, around 80,000 were transported to New South Wales.
This workshop will begin by looking at how researchers can learn more about convict crimes by providing advice and guidance on accessing the court records relating to their convictions. Tips on locating newspaper accounts of the trials will also be covered.
The workshop will then look at how to find out more about tracking down the crimes committed by 'felons, forgers and fraudsters' who appeared before the various criminal courts in New South Wales from the earliest times until the early 20th century.
About the speakers:
Dr Kathrine M. Reynolds specialises in nineteenth-century migration and criminal history and has published several books on nineteenth-century migration.
