Rising in the heart of Chinatown, the fire horse welcomes the Lunar New Year with light, warmth and optimism.
Stride into the Year of the Fire Horse with a visit to our Sydney Lunar Festival public art installation. See the fire horse on Dixon Street mid-surge as it rises to meet the Lunar New Year. It appears forged from flame, projecting a spirited momentum.
Its dynamic form expresses confidence, ambition and strength. These are qualities shared by people born in the Year of the Horse and also reflect the energy of Haymarket, a precinct defined by movement, enterprise and cultural exchange.
In the Chinese zodiac, the Fire Horse appears only once every 60 years and symbolises passion, vitality and brightness. The Fire Horse on Dixon Street stands both as a celebration of tradition and an expression of contemporary values. It invites connection, reflection and shared joy at the start of the Lunar New Year.
The Fire Horse on Dixon Street was designed by Basalt Studio.
Basalt Studio is an award-winning design firm led by sibling duo Anthony and Fiona Ho. Working across public art, architecture and urban places, the studio highlights the stories of cities and explores Asian-Australian cultural identities through their work.
