It's hard to choose a favourite item from a collection including thousands of photographs and documents, as well as books and oral histories. However, a recent donation has prompted a fresh look at some historic brochures celebrating the opening and development of Perth's first freeway and the Narrows Bridge, which made such a huge change in transport connections between the north and south of the city.
It includes advice to drivers about how to use the new freeway, but there's just one line about merging, stating: "do so gradually and signal your intentions." There's no reference to giving way! So as the Narrows Bridge marks its 60th anniversary, the arguments still rage about Perth driving standards.
The brochures are part of a large research collection available at the History Centre, accessible during Library opening hours. They'll be featured in a popup display at the History Centre on Friday April 17 from 2pm to 5pm with the Collections Officer available for further information.
Enquiries to Collections Officer 9461 3537.
Meeting Point: City of Perth Library, Level 2, History Centre.
