In his debut Australian exhibition, American Artist Gregory Uzelac will put a series of striking questions to his audiences at The Art Syndicate gallery in Surry Hills. After several international exhibits, this young artist, writer, and comedian will turn his attention to Australian audiences.
The Nice is different than Good exhibition is set to examine questions about the intersection between mythology, pop culture, and identity. And there is no question: Uzelac's abstract art jolts audiences into new self-realizations. He reminds audiences of the power of individual agency, particularly how we exercise control over our perceptions and why this is so important identity formation in our world today.
Uzelac's work draws on powerful mythic forms and archetypes that trigger questions. In the 21st century is it now the case that heroism is defined more by ends, rather than by means? How do we perceive who and what is heroic and what is villainous? Are we comfortable with the notion that the hero and the villain are coming to look more and more alike in today's shapeshifting society?
Uzelac previously exhibited at Christie's NYC and Google Chelsea NYC. Now he has successfully secured access to one of Sydney's newest and innovative galleries The Art Syndicate. 'We are lucky to have Gregory. And I honestly feel it is the right time to debut an American artist who aims to shift our focus here in Australia,' said Gallerist Saxon Strass.
Expect small, recycled canvases with punch. Prepare for colours and forms that capture distorted and often disturbing realities. More importantly, ready yourself for a series of existential mirrors.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see a contemporary international artist up close.
