The Tooheys Limited collection has been an untapped resource, in the Mitchell Library stack, unnoticed by historians. Dr Lisa Murray - the State Library's 2021 Hertzberg Fellow - has been exploring this special collection of business and industry records.
The Tooheys Limited collection, which comprises 300 volumes, provides an important counterpoint to the extensive Tooth & Co collections held elsewhere. Lisa will share some of her insights and discoveries from tapping these historical records, including the architects who were commissioned by Tooheys to redesign their pubs.
She will also demonstrate the digital mapping she has undertaken of Tooheys tied-hotels, based on data extracted from the collection. This significant collection promises a deeper understanding of the way the breweries controlled the industry and influenced pub culture in New South Wales, and demonstrates Tooheys position within that market.
This event will take place online via Zoom. Register here.
Dr Lisa Murray is the 2021 Hertzberg Fellow at the State Library of NSW and the City Historian, overseeing a diverse program at the City of Sydney Council. With 20 years of experience in the field of public history, Lisa is passionate about making our history accessible to everyone. Recent publications include the award-winning Sydney cemeteries: a field guide (NewSouth Publishing, 2016) and Our city: 175 years in 175 objects (City of Sydney, 2017).
