Hear from veteran and Indigenous Elder for the Australian Army, Lorraine Hatton OAM, a proud Quandamooka woman of the Noonuccal and Ngughi tribes in South-East Queensland, as she discusses the rich history of Indigenous service in Australia.

Lorraine will include updates on the recent dedications of Indigenous servicemen's grave sites, as well as shedding light on the new Indigenous Memorial in Anzac Square which commemorates the distinguished service record of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples defending country through a mixture of traditional Indigenous artwork and European sculptural style.

The sculpture, unveiled on 27 May, is designed by Wakka Wakka artist John Smith and sculptor Liam Hardy. It will be the first in Brisbane to honour Indigenous soldiers, specifically those from Queensland. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have had a longstanding tradition of fighting for their country, and the memorial will provide an opportunity to reflect on this proud heritage.

This talk series draws from State Library's digital collection of military stories, diaries, letters, photographs and artefacts.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this presentation may contain images, voices or names of deceased persons in photographs, film, audio recordings or printed material.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
