Over the years saxophonist Mark Ginsburg has initiated a number of exciting and diverse jazz-based ventures including The Mark Ginsburg Band, his highly popular South African Project, and more recently his 'Convergence' recording and tour with Italian pianist Vittorio Mezza.
His latest concept, 'Homage', is a collaboration with trumpeter Ray Cassar, inspired by that hallmark combination of trumpet and sax so frequently featured in the classic Blue Note quintets.
Together with pianist Ryan Grogan, bassist Karl Dunnicliff and drummer Tim Firth, they have formed this quintet to honour the great composers and players who created much of the foundation upon which they stand today. Their repertoire includes the music of Horace Silver, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, Charlie Parker, Bheki Mseleku, Roy Hargrove, and Randy Brecker, as well as original compositions of their own.
Formed in 1939, Blue Note is one of the great jazz record labels which peaked in the 60s and 70s with its own unique sound and standout cover artwork - not to mention a roster of some of the greatest jazz musicians ever. Homage plan to not only revisit that groundbreaking era but put their own spin and interpretation on some of the finest compositions originally recorded for the label.
