Hear from artist Richard Bell and Clothilde Bullen, MCA Senior Curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Exhibitions and Collections during this event. The two will reflect on the artist's friendships and global connections, love of humour and satire, and subverting perceptions of Aboriginal art and activism.
About the artist
Richard Bell was born in 1953 in Charleville, Queensland. The artist lives and works in Brisbane. He is a member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities.
An activist and artist, Richard works across video, painting, installation, and text to pose provocative, complex and humorous challenges to the positioning of Aboriginal art and cultural material within a western canon of art and addressing contemporary debates around identity, place and politics.
About Clothilde Bullen
Clothilde Bullen is a Wardandi (Nyoongar) and Badimaya (Yamatji) Aboriginal woman with English/French heritage. She commenced as Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Exhibitions and Collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art in early 2017, after more than a decade as Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth. She is also a Board member of Art Monthly Australasia magazine.
Clothilde was on the Inaugural Advisory Committee for the Wesfarmers and NGA Indigenous Arts Leadership Program and is an Alumni member of the British Council Accelerate Scholarship for Indigenous Leadership in the Arts.
