This workshop is part of the foundations dance and knowledge workshop series at Crossover Dance Studio.
Foundations aims to facilitate students knowledge of the history, culture and the community aspect of a dance style in addition to the teaching of dance technique and foundation. This will be taught over a 3-hour dance workshop that includes time for Q&A, video viewing and other materials. With the support of City of Sydney, these workshops will be offered for the first time for only $30 with limited spots available.
Overview
In this workshop we hope to share with you a basic understanding of the puppet and scarecrow styles. We aim to equip you not with a dogma on how to execute the styles, but rather an understanding of the essence of each character and a toolset for exploring and growing your own approach to the styles within the context of its rich history in street dance.
What is Puppet and Scarecrow?
The scarecrow style was created by Boogaloo Sam back in 1977, and based off the scarecrow character from the Wizard of Oz, although this style drew inspiration from many other sources to become what we know today.
The puppet style, much like scarecrow gained traction and popularity internationally thanks largely to the Electric Boogaloos. It draws heavy inspiration from marionette shows, miming and animated works like Pinocchio (1940) and Jack Frost (1934). The style and character have developed in street dance over the years thanks to pioneers such as Mr Wiggles, Skeeter Rabbit and Puppet Boozer, but has strong roots outside of street dance with innovators like Robert Shields and Dick Van Dyke.
All participants must register to attend. Limited spots remaining, so register ASAP.
