With cardboard, paper and hessian, Junko Asaba and Yana Myronenko create visual works which follow the practice of combining traditional media and craft with the vocabulary of geometric abstraction.
In her work, Junko is exploring the expressive possibilities of tension and freedom. She usually starts with great curiosity and a mixture of expectation and fear as she explores the unknown without preconception or planning. 'I try to find something, to discover something interesting emerging from the materials'. In these works, she was searching for softness and yielding in the rigidity of cardboard and found that squeezing produced a power dynamic. It is her wish that the viewer will experience the tension between the unexpected fluidity of the materials and the structure of her work.
Yana finds inspiration in the European artists of the early 20th century when the invention of abstraction gave artists the freedom to break through the representational conventions of academic art and the early Moderns, developing new ideas and a new way of seeing and experiencing the visual world. She has found particular inspiration in the creativity of women artists working during this period: Natalia Goncharova, Sonia Delaunay, and especially Sophie Tauber-Arp.
In her work Yana experiments with different materials choosing to experience the resistance of the surface in response to her gestures. She delights in the possibilities of line, shape and colour, playing with the dynamics of spontaneity and structure, flow and constraint. These elements are interwoven in her works emulating a thread following a continuous journey, a song, a story…
