The Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) Australia presents an online Korean Book Club.
Held via Zoom, the event will discuss The Island of Sea Women, a novel by the bestselling author, Lisa See.
Set on the Korean island of Jeju, 'The Island of Sea Women' follows Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls from very different backgrounds, as they begin working in the sea with their village's all-female diving collective (haenyeo).
Over many decades - through the Japanese colonialism, World War II, the Korean War, and its aftermath - Mi-ja and Young-sook develop the closest bonds. Nevertheless, their differences are impossible to ignore: Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator, forever marking her, and Young-sook was born into a long line of haenyeo and will inherit her mother's position leading the divers.
After hundreds of dives and years of friendship, forces outside their control will push their relationship to the breaking point.
Join Australian writer/editor Bri Lee and Lisa See, the author of the book for this online discussion as they explore the complexities of female friendship and introduce the remarkably strong and spirited female divers of Jeju Island.
There are fifteen (15) signed copies of the book to give away, so ensure to register early.
