Stanley Street Gallery presents Lossy a duo exhbition by AC Parnell & ADHOC.
Lossy brings together new works by ceramicist AC Parnell and multimedia artist and designer ADHOC that explore the tensions between traditional craft, technologies and digital culture.
In a time of rapid technological development, the rise of generative Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) combined with robotic manufacturing capabilities present new and existential threats to the craftsperson.
While generative A.I. can be used to produce creative work at speed, it isn't always correct. A.I. is prone to hallucinate, or fabricate answers when it lacks data. Some attribute A.I. hallucinations as proof of machine consciousness, yet they are evidence of technology's inability to grasp the physical world.
Both artists work with, and interpret these hallucinations, or messages/messengers of God in unique ways. Combining traditional crafts materials and processes such as ceramics and metal with digital processes such as image manipulation, collage and A.I. generated instructions the artists provide touchpoints for understanding how to interface with, and understand digital deities through materials and psychological space.
Much like the lossy image where random sections of a digital image are lost permanently when it is compressed for digital storage, the resulting visual themes of glitch, abstraction and degradation are artefacts of the material meeting the digital.
