Honourable, philanthropic and optimistic, the Pig can be incredibly focused and achieve great things.
With a delicate and airy appearance, a deconstructed three-dimensional grid has been carved out to form an abstract silhouette of a Pig. At 15 years of age, Qian was decentralised to a countryside farm during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The artist took it upon himself to care for the pigs to ensure they were safe. The lantern is inspired by Qian's personal experience and reflects the wonderful qualities of the pig, including happiness and good fortune.
About the artist
Qian Jian Hua was born in Nanjing and came to Australia in 1991 as a visiting scholar. He now lives and works in Sydney and his sculptures have been displayed in many major exhibitions in Australia.
The Lunar Lanterns will be lit from dusk each evening, but are just as impressive by day.
