The Sydney Jewish Museum welcomes back Emeritus Professor Donna Robinson-Divine in partnership with Sydney University Department of Hebrew, Biblical and Jewish Studies and Mandelbaum House.
As editor of the book A Place to Call Home: The Story of How a TV Series Stirred Passions and Connections, Donna will discuss the Australian TV series A Place To Call Home as both a Jewish and Australian story.
Set in 1953, A Place To Call Home describes the social changes sweeping Australia in the aftermath of a devastating world war that endangered the homeland and opened the continent to new trends that challenged hierarchies based on class, ethnicity, and sexual identification.
During its second season, the network cancelled the series, but a campaign to continue the program proved successful as a streaming service helped rescue and sustain it through six seasons.
Donna Robinson Divine is Morningstar Family Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Government, emerita at Smith College. She has written books and articles on Middle East culture and politics. Among her most recent is Exiled in the Homeland: Zionism and the Return to Mandate Palestine.
