The new exhibition from Mai Nguyen-Long at Art Atrium this October, is a continuation of the artist's acclaimed series that premiered at the 12th Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Art earlier this year.
Nguyen-Long is producing a visual language and growing body of work on her own terms. Her artworks offer a merger between expressive forms and cultural content, aligning folk traditions, language, Mai's current PHD research and ceramic making. The artist interweaves personal stories, past and present and those of her Vietnam heritage. This evolving series of hand worked clay ceramics focuses on themes of subverting hierarchies, celebrating marginality and the flow of humanity.
Playful, thought provoking and sometimes strange, this art series has taken Mai from her home studio in Bulli, on the Illawarra coast, south of Sydney, to the international art stage of Berlin and back again, for exhibition in Sydney this spring.
Nguyen-Long is showing alongside her good friend and mentor acclaimed photographer William Yang, at Art Atrium. As Mai says, 'this is a conversation about minorities and showing with William forces the artworks to have a dialogue with each other.'
Mai Nguyen-Long is a selected finalist in the 2022 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize (13 Oct - 20 Nov, Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf).
Artist Talks at Art Atrium Saturday 22 October - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Mai Nguyen-Long in conversation with Melanie Eastburn (Senior Curator Asian Art, Art Gallery of NSW) 2.00 - 3.00 pm
William Yang in conversation with Benjamin Law (Writer & Raconteur) 3.00 - 4.00 pm
