Marijke Greenway has been seriously in love with painting for over 40 years. She's self taught and still experimenting every day. She is known for her strong use of colour and a sense of design - and for being prolific.
She works in watercolour, acrylic, oils and encaustic. She finds painting 'en plein air' exciting and challenging and has painted the outback whilst travelling in three long loops around Australia.
She has taught art for nearly 30 years, mostly at art societies and Gosford Regional Gallery. Apart from entering juried exhibitions, she organised an annual solo exhibition for 13 years at The Palm House in the Botanic Gardens, but now exhibits her collection mainly in her Sunday gallery at home at Pearl Beach.
Encaustic means 'burning in' - a very old medium revived. It is painting with hot beeswax, damar resin and pigments. Once applied to the surface, the medium hardens immediately and has to be remelted with a blowtorch to move the hot wax around and so fuse it with the layers below. This is repeated layer after layer until the desired effect is achieved... or not, in which case it can all be scraped off again for another attempt.
At present trees are Marijke's favourite subject, but her most exciting medium is encaustic, so therefore Trees in Encaustic gives her the best of both worlds.
