Celebrated wine regions come with a reputation. But what happens when new producers step forward? The answer is often dynamic. Have a closer look at the Clare Valley's heritage and future.
Wine writer Nick Ryan will host this masterclass, with winemakers Kerri Thompson, Jono Koerner and Colin McBride joining the conversation. Taste wines from them, alongside stalwarts like Jim Barry and Wendouree, and discover how Clare Valley expressions are evolving. New labels, innovative wines and sub-regionality are all on the table.
Riesling is Thompson's first love. She is based near Watervale and works with grapes from sustainably managed vineyards planted in 1970 and 1997 respectively, making vibrant and diverse wines known for pushing boundaries with assurance.
Koerner and brother Damon use Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills fruit for their Koerner Wine, LEKO Wine and Brothers Koerner brands, working with traditional and unique varieties and staying true to both variety and vineyard. Their approachable, textured efforts continue to win praise.
Experimentation also drives McBride, who makes wine for three labels: serious, organic Adelina, collaborative Some Young Punks and the left-field Vine Mind. This latter project uses exclusively Clare Valley fruit, challenging convention in bold new ways.
It's time to take another look at this fascinating part of South Australia - and to consider how it will share our state's story in the decades ahead.
