Join Dr Eve Wicks as she presents Saulėje ir šešėlyje: In Sunshine and Shadow - a compelling Lithuanian migrant story told expressively through historical and contemporary photographic images and texts which bring forth many voices. In this art book, people speak through oral histories, the immigrant writers' poems, songs reflecting a centuries-long cultural tradition, and the author's expressive prose. The Lithuanians were amongst the earliest wave of continental European immigrants - Displaced Persons - post-World War Two. The immigrant influx which continued for succeeding decades eventually changed Australia's British society and assimilationist expectations. Her work overcomes the immigrants' silence of the past to express their migration and settlement experience within a rich Lithuanian cultural milieu. The project received generous support from Brisbane City Council, the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, the Australian Lithuanian Foundation Inc., through the Father Bačinskas Lithuanian Cultural Association Inc.Books will be available for purchase on the day, or bring your copy from home to be signed.
