Sydney's elected aldermen have included a department store founder, a Japanese prisoner-of-war survivor, a Kings Cross Waxworks manager, a convict, and a few illegitimate sons of convicts.
Around 500 men and women have served as aldermen or councillors on the City of Sydney Council since it was formed in 1842. Hundreds more served on the surrounding suburban councils that were absorbed into the City of Sydney local government area in the 20th century, including Redfern, Glebe and Newtown.
Discover some of the interesting people who have represented Sydney's residents on the council and learn more about the Sydney's Aldermen website. These people have played a hands-on role in governing our suburbs and communities.
Presented by historians Laila Ellmoos and Lisa Murray. This online event will be Auslan interpreted.
The City of Sydney is a proud participant in History Week, the statewide festival coordinated by the History Council of NSW. For more events visit the website.
