We are very excited to have launched Passage, a new installation art gallery now open at 102/8 Quay Street, Haymarket, with Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria's exhibition 'Opening Ceremony'. As with all our shows at Passage the installation was developed to be viewed through the window, so stop by any time during the exhibition dates from January 25 - March 5.
'Opening Ceremony' is an installation that interprets the grasses and fields of Walbunja country or the Southern Tablelands where the artist lived for five years on a remote property. During the La Nina period, it was the growth of yellow dandelions that entranced Wolfe-Alegria.
Though the dandelion is a sweet small flower, it is hard to ignore that such a weed can cause negative effects on Australia's native flora, and its embodiment of colonial tropes and the Anthropocene. Wolfe-Alegria's dandelions tower in scale, dwarfing the foliage growing below. Their monstrous mouths gape with teeth like petals, exploring the dark undercurrents of the unassuming flower.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
