From De Falla's ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat, the Miller's Dance portrays both bull and bullfighter in a fury of athleticism, while Nordic folk music tells of ties to homelands and family. Fischer's 'Mad Piper' draws on Scottish, Czech, Bulgarian and Romanian folk music, inspired by the courageous Piper Bill who played his bagpipes whilst under fire on D-Day in Normandy.
With a reputation for revelatory performances of Shostakovich, the Oravas also present his breathtaking sixth String Quartet, composed while on a honeymoon; lighter in mood yet with an edge of solemnity, and arguably a harbinger for his mighty eighth quartet.
