Discover the work of Renaissance master, Raphael in an illuminating three-part online lecture series.
Originally presented at the Art Gallery of NSW by Art Gallery NSW Members, this lecture series is now available to view on-demand until 30 August.
Featuring leading art historians Dr John Gagne, Lorraine Kypiotis and Dr Michael Hill, this highly popular three-part series celebrates the life and legacy of High Renaissance master, Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483-1520) marking 500 years of his artistic genius and enduring creative influence.
Lecture program:
Raphael's early years
Dr John Gagne explores the life and work of a young Raphael - from early influences like his own father the Umbrian master Giovanni to the artist's experiments in media and in subject matter, and life in Florence in the company of Michelangelo and Leonardo.
Raphael in Rome
In the second lecture of the series, art historian Lorraine Kypiotis follows Raphael to Rome, when at the age of 25 he was summoned by Pope Julius II (r.1503-13) to paint various rooms of the Vatican adjoining the Sistine Chapel, resulting in some of Raphael's most iconic works.
Raphael's portraits
Art history lecturer Dr Michael Hill examines Raphael's unique approach to portraiture in this final lecture. Whether the sitter was a pope or a young bride, Raphael's delicate and solicitous sensibility allowed the uncertainty of personality to be pictured as if for the first time.
Proudly sponsored by Istituto Italiano di Cultura - Cultural Office of the Consulate General of Italy.
Bookings:
Book all three lectures at a special ticket price and enjoy online at your own pace until 30 August.
