Does the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 - which will feature in the History Reflected exhibition - still represent NSW today? Join the discussion as our guest speakers share their views.
The NSW Anti-Discrimination Act was introduced by the Wran Government in 1977. It set out definitions of discrimination and identified which types of discrimination and vilification were unlawful. At the time, the Act was a watershed moment.
As social attitudes in our state and nation have shifted since then - many disrupted by political activism and social justice movements - so, too, have the meaning and effect of the Act. In 2021, does the Act encompass current definitions of discrimination? Does its original intention still hold true? If not, why not?
In this lively panel discussion hosted by Sydney Living Museums curator, Mel Flyte, we examine some of the key amendments made to the Act, explore what triggered these changes, and ask what changes need to be made next.
