China Matters' 2022 in-person Sydney Lecture Series: Rethinking China features speakers of diverse expertise and background with the aim to inject breadth and depth into the public discussion about the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Jane Hutcheon, the ABC's former China correspondent, will describe how she sees China, why she sees China the way she does, and on that basis share her thoughts on what Australia's approach to the PRC should be. In conversation with Jane will be James Curran, Professor of History at the University of Sydney.

Drinks and canapés will follow the lecture.

China Matters thanks PwC for their generous support of this event.

About the speakers:

Jane Hutcheon is a freelance journalist, author and performer. Born and educated in Hong Kong, she began her career in the former colony before becoming the ABC's China correspondent from 1995 to 2001, followed by postings to the Middle East and Europe. Jane created and hosted the ABC interview show One Plus One from 2010 to 2019. In 2022 she wrote and performed the theatre narrative Lost in Shanghai on the life of her Shanghai-born mother for the Sydney Festival. She is the author of three books: From Rice to Riches; China Baby Love; and her latest, Rebel Talk, the art of powerful conversations.

James Curran is Professor of History at the University of Sydney. He specialises in the history of Australian and American foreign relations. Prior to joining academia, James worked in The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Office of National Assessments. A non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy, he is also a regular commentator on radio and television, and his opinion pieces on foreign affairs and political culture have appeared in major Australian newspapers as well as the Lowy Interpreter, China-US Focus, the East Asia Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations 'Asia Unbound' series.
