Block Ink vs Slab Building
Often drawing inspiration from dreams, Sara Buchner (SilvesterArt) creates small, uncomplicated illustrations and sculptures that predominantly depict scenes of heartwarming delight.
Influenced by the work of Wiener Werkstätte as published in Ver Sacrum, Sara's pieces merge clean lines with narrative, imbuing the work with an expressive and animated quality. This animation is accentuated and brought surreally into the everyday by the use of ubiquitous discarded materials such as scrap wallpaper samples or linoleum-floor offcuts; which are collaged into bold watercolours as accents or turned into printed linocuts.
Ceramic pieces are created with a slab building technique, influenced by the model-making practices, conceptual shapes, facades and windows found in architecture. Many pieces are an exploration of morphing 2-dimensional graphics onto 3-dimensional forms and shapes, even incorporating printmaking blocks to press intents into the clay, creating illustrations on clay surfaces.
SilvesterArt's works offer a glimpse into a moment; as if pausing a story; a still frame, without explanation of what happened before or after. The viewer is invited to invent their own story, re-interpret these ephemeral snippets and perhaps stumble into a dream of their own.
