In this fascinating lecture, Jane Henderson, professor of conservation at Cardiff University in Wales and secretary general of the International Institute for Conservation, reflects on the evolving protocols around who can and who can't touch artworks.
Henderson champions the idea that conservation and collection care needs to be more open to the benefits of touch in a contextually appropriate manner. She'll use the infamous incident when Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's iconic 1962 dress - in which Monroe sang 'Happy birthday' to US President John F Kennedy - to the 2022 Met Gala to illustrate her point.
Henderson will share insights into the current debates around how conservators can build more inclusive and diverse practices by considering who conservation is for, how conservators discuss touch, and who defines the criteria used to define tactile access. She posits that this relationship with touch needs to be restructured and include more 'grey' areas.
The lecture will include a conversation with Julian Bickersteth, CEO of International Conservation Services and president of the International Institute for Conservation, and Carolyn Murphy, head of conservation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
