Join Cate Whittaker, a lecturer specialising in 19th Century History, as she uncovers the life of Elizabeth Fry.
Elizabeth Fry was a timid child, terrified of the dark and of drowning, so hardly the type of person likely to revolutionise society's attitudes towards female prisoners from retribution to reform. Few would expect this gently spoken Quaker would be a powerful voice for female convicts on their boats fighting for their protection or ensuring their safety and teaching of skills in their factories for over twenty five years.
Using her letters, diaries and her own addresses to Select Parliamentary Committees, plus biographies with illustrations of the places she visited, join Cate Whittaker as she builds a picture of a truly remarkable woman, who died, worn out from her continual efforts to help 'those unfortunate women' which she regarded as a privilege.
