This workshop is part of the FOUNDATIONS dance & knowledge workshop series at Crossover Dance Studio. With the support of City of Sydney, these workshops will be offered for the first time for only $30 with limited spots available.
FOUNDATIONS aims to delve more deeply into, and facilitate the learning of dance history, culture and its community aspects, in addition to the standard teaching of the dance style's own distinct techniques and foundations. This will be taught over a 3-hour dance workshop catered to new students that includes time for Q&A, video viewing and other supplementary material.

WOMEN'S INTRO TO BREAKING: From complete beginners to novice B-Girls
As taught by Rachael Gunn AKA B-Girl Raygun of crew 143 Liverpool Street Familia
OVERVIEW: This workshop is designed for women to gain a deeper introduction to Breaking (known in popular media as 'Breakdancing'). It is open to women interested in the style of Breaking, including those who are completely new to Breaking, and those who have been Breaking for a few years. This workshop will be both practical and theoretical.
WHAT TO BRING: For Breaking, you should wear loose fitting clothing. It is recommended you wear a t-shirt (or long sleeve top), long pants (such as trackpants), and sneakers. You should also bring something you can use to take notes.
WORKSHOP CONTENT:
The 3-hour workshop aims to cover the following topics:
Brief history of Breaking
Cultures and traditions of Breaking
Learning the foundation, developing your style, understanding biting
Women in Breaking culture
Strategies for success
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
B-girl Raygun is one of Australia's leading B-girls and represents the Sydney crew 143 Liverpool Street Familia. She's been Breaking since 2012, and with her crew she won Rhythm Faction's 10 Year Anniversary crew battle (2019) and the Sydney Bboy League (2014). Individually, she placed runner up at the 1v1 B-girl battle at Destructive Steps 11 (2019), won the 1v1 B-girl battle at Ryugi Vol. 25 (2019), and was Australia's highest-ranking B-girl in the 2020 ABA Rankings. If she's not battling in the B-girl or open Breaking comps she's probably on the mic, and has emceed at a multitude of events including Ladies Night, Ryugi and Destructive Steps.
Raygun is also known as Dr Rachael Gunn, a lecturer at Macquarie University. She completed her PhD on Breaking culture in 2017 and her research on Breaking has been published in Continuum: Journal of Media and Culture, Journal of World Popular Music, and the edited book Nocturnes: Popular Music and the Night. Raygun has long been active in growing the Sydney B-girl community, and aims to inspire more women to learn and succeed in Breaking.
