Vermilion Art is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition by acclaimed Chinese artist- Li Jin.To Live [It Up] has been curated by leading art critic- John McDonald- a long-term admirer of his work.From 2001-2013 Li Jin's brush-and-ink paintings were exhibited in Sydney- with great success- by the late Ray Hughes. Over the past decade Li Jin has become a global favourite- exhibiting extensively in museums and private galleries in China- Europe and the United States- where his work has been acquired by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art- New York and the Boston Museum of Fine ArtsChinese ink painting may conjure up thoughts of serene- landscapes- flowers and birds- but Li Jin takes a very different approach. Although he is steeped in tradition- and master of many techniques- his pictures are bold- whimsical and sensual - hedonistic celebrations of the pleasures of food- drink and sex - seen through a frame of self-deprecating humour.To Live [It Up]features 38 works- including a suite of 20 small- idiosyncratic coloured ink paintings- eight ink sketches incorporating his distinctive calligraphy- two painted fans- five semi-abstract ink pieces- two large- scale works on paper and one magnificent scroll painting.According to John McDonald- To Live [It Up] has a message that relates to both China's recent history and the COVID-19 outbreak: 'Having come through the hard times- we should make the most of the good times.' Or as Li Jin himself puts it: 'My appetite for life and my desire to express myself have not been diminished by the pandemic. Monica Trapaga is a consummate performer- her warmth and wit instrumental to her success as an entertainer and jazz singer and featuring in major festivals across the world. She has described her 'fairly crazy Latin family' as instrumental in developing her musical tastes and influencing her exploration of a range of contemporary styles performing with jazz- pop and big bands. A born entertainer- this veteran performer has covered a plethora of musical styles and settings- from lounge to swing and Afro-Cuban big band- delighting audiences. Smouldering horn lines burn through charming arrangements- free of pretence. A traditional sense of musicianship and a strong sense of melody permeates Overmyer's compositions- with a maturity to her playing and phrasing that belies her youth.Covid-safe measuresDo not attend if you are feeling unwell. Oh snap! WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is scaling and tailing up your Halloween celebrations this year with a deliciously wicked pop-up CROCtail Bar inside an underground Crocodile Den. That's right- inside a crocodile den with an actual crocodile.Just a piece of (sturdy and thick) glass will stand between you and the Darling Harbour zoo's mammoth Saltwater Crocodile. His name is Rocky- he is over 4m long and weighs at least 365kg! Don't get on his bad side!Upon arrival- guests will be greeted with a free drink and a rare hands-on reptile encounter (snake or lizard).It's then on to find an allocated seat to order some tasty tapas and cocktails aka CROCtails made by mobile bar company Trolley'd using locally and responsibly sourced native and wild foraged ingredients such as roasted wattle- urban beehive honey and Illawarra Plum Vodka.The evening kicks on when the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo team emerge for a Croc Talk and there may even be the chance to watch Rocky feed! Tickets are $15 per person and include a free beer or house wine on arrival. Plus $5 from each ticket sold will be donated to the WILD LIFE Conservation Fund supporting animal research- conservation and welfare.Seating is limited with only 13 spots available per session in the Croc Den and 38 in the Upper Viewing Deck.
