FIKA' is the new album by electric viola da gamba ensemble Elysian Fields. Inspired by Scandinavia- 'FIKA' is rooted in the Swedish ancestry of Artistic Director Jenny Eriksson- and her love of northern European jazz and Swedish baroque music. This beautiful international project sings to the gathering of friends- food and conversation through the idiosyncratic viola de gamba. Produced by saxophonist Matt Keegan and featuring the stunning vocals and violin of Susie Bishop- 'FIKA' takes inspiration from the frozen landscapes of Scandinavia- drawing on traditional folk music and language.Susie Bishop (voice-violin) Matt Keegan (saxophones) Jenny Eriksson (electric viola da ga gamba) Matt McMahon (piano) Siebe Pogson (bass guitar) Dave Goodman (drums)Special Support: Jo TrumanJosephine Truman is an artist skirting the boundary of tradition and experimentation. Her cross-pollination of traditional and experimental performance styles caught the ear of legendary composer- theorist and artist John Cage- with whom she collaborated on 'Song Books'. Fans of music that tests the edges of improvisation and experimentation will love Jo Truman's performance. Covid-safe measuresDo not attend if you are feeling unwell. Shows will be seated and limited to 60 per sitting- with patrons seated to allow for social distancing. Please adhere to social distancing at all times and follow direction from venue staff. The Art Gallery of New South Wales presents Real Worlds- the fourth Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial. Supported by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation- this exhibition presents new work by eight contemporary Australian artists who create extraordinary new worlds in drawings of great complexity and invention.With drawing as the principal medium- the exhibited works evoke distinctive ways of seeing and making sense of the world. For some- it recreates a physical environment- grounded in a deep connection to place or country. For others- it is an invention that springs forth from history- memory and the imagination.Real Worlds features drawings by Martin Bell- Matt Coyle- Nathan Hawkes- Danie Mellor- Peter Mungkuri- Becc Orszag- Jack Stahel and Helen Wright.Each Biennial has a different curatorial concept and seeks to showcase the vitality and breadth of drawing in contemporary Australian art. Some of the exhibited works from each Biennial are acquired for the Gallery's permanent collection.The Gallery will continue to be guided by the NSW Government's health guidelines. This unique 9-week course combines the 2 disciplines of drawing and sculpture in a friendly and accessible studio environment. This class is conducted within Covid-19 safe guidelines with student numbers limited and physical distancing implemented. The health of our students is a priority in the delivery of this course.Instruction in classic and contemporary sculpture- such as clay modelling and carving- is provided. Instruction will be provided in figure proportion- capturing volumes- rendering portrait features and observational drawing skills. Ideas can then be transferred to sculptures which display the acquired skills.No previous experience required. Beginners welcome.Tools provided. Clay can be purchased at venue.

Gallery NTK conducts art classes for children with an emphasis on various techniques in painting and drawing. We are the multi-award-winning- longest-running art school in the Inner West.All classes will run for a 10-week term and are facilitated by acclaimed professional artist and highly qualified visual arts teacher Norma Tahhan. Norma holds a Master's in Fine Arts and Master's in Art Education.Students are encouraged to further develop their artistic and creative skills in various painting and drawing media and develop their creativity through expert tuition. This will include sketching- watercolour- charcoal- chalk and oil pastel- acrylic painting and oil painting. Do you wish you had the confidence and skill to draw whatever you see?Taught by artist Richard Byrnes- this in studio course provides techniques and skills for solid observational drawing.The class takes place at the venue and operates within strict Covid safe procedures.Each week- students will undertake a range of drawing exercises aimed at increasing skills and confidence.What will be coveredWe will cover figures- faces- proportion- shading- perspective and much more.The 9-week term provides a broad and practical skill base that will allow students to undertake any drawing challenge.Beginners welcome.Bring your own sketchbook and favourite media.The class is taught following Covid-19 safe procedures- has limited student numbers and employs physical distancing. Gallery 1: ORIENTATION : LANDSCAPE - Catherine Boardman- Margaret Dix- Nicola Dunbar & Alexandra Mills 'The urge to trap in two-dimensions- a piece of a place or the sensation it creates in us is strong and for centuries artists have pursued the representation of landscape in many media and formats.'  Gallery 2: Edge of Disquiet - Jacqui Driver 'Much of my work responds to my own experience of the unstable emotional states of grief- trauma- and anxiety- as well as dealing with the physical pain of chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis- I am inviting the audience to acknowledge spaces of discomfort and non-conformity.'Gallery 3: HEAD ON PHOTO FESTIVAL presents Apophony Lilium  Ben Blick-Hodge 'Following the linguistic concept of the same name- the Apophony series aims to explore a kind of visual intonation. Using a process of photographic capture and digital arrangement- for these works true lilies are faceted into structurally symmetrical wreathes. From the natural fall of light in multiple photographs- a coherent light source is then gathered to illuminate a form that hovers between idea and object- fabrication and documentation.'Gallery 4: DAILY RITUALS - Erin O'Brien 'As a freelance illustrator and designer- I am often constrained to the client's brief. Daily Rituals is my chance to think and draw freely every day with the influence of a single word prompt. An opportunity to do something just for me. No client notes or edits- just the joy of putting pen to paper and taking a drawing from start to finish in the space of 20 minutes. Daily Rituals is an exercise in not overthinking it- and in making art more accessible to myself and to others. Just 366 small- manageable- daily goals.'Covid-19 Safe Guidelines As a result of Covid-19 & social distancing- we will not hold our typical opening night on Thursday's fortnightly. However- we will be extending our hours on Saturday from 10am - 5pm. We encourage visitors to social distance and avoid crowding while we celebrate artists and their artworks.In accordance with the recommended social distancing rules- we have a maximum of 25 people allowed in the gallery.Our staff will be monitoring numbers and you may be asked to wait should we reach the limit.Dates may be subject to change based on current restrictions.
