A Loving City: Queerberra Revisited explores love, identity and resilience within Canberra's LGBTQIA+ community.
In 2017, photographer Jane Duong and producer Victoria Firth-Smith created Queerberra to document queer Canberrans during the national postal vote on marriage equality. Their portraits captured moments of pride, exhaustion, defiance and hope at a time when love itself was being publicly debated.
The project became a time capsule of over 100 portraits across the queer spectrum. It celebrated the everyday courage of living authentically, from drag artists and activists to families and friends opening their doors to be seen.
Eight years later, A Loving City: Queerberra Revisited returns to these portraits to ask what has changed. The exhibition reflects on personal growth, community strength and the enduring power of love in all its forms.
This exhibition invites visitors to consider how far we have come and the work that remains. It is a story of connection, visibility and belonging in the city that voted 'yes' more strongly than any other in Australia.
