Joseph and Rachel Moore, Northern-born Black New Yorkers, lived in a tenement at 17 Laurens Street, less than a mile from the Tenement Museum's newly renovated home. Their building's courtyard was shared with two other tenements, which were home to Irish, West Indian, Cuban and French immigrants and domestic migrants. This new permanent exhibit tells the story of the Moores, their neighborhood's diversity and how communities were formed through businesses, schools and churches in what was known as the Eighth Ward.
