MAY SPACE is proud to present two new artists to the Gallery in our latest Introducing exhibition, Melbourne-based fibre artist Aerial Morallos and Sydney-based sculptor Alicia Zhao in 'Material in Metamorphosis'
'Fibre artist Aerial Morallos goes about a tactile approach when illustrating her environment. Initially trained as a painter at the National Art School in Sydney, she began experimenting with materials in search to find other modes of painting. Inspired by yarn's versatility, her works not only became about the final product, but about the physical and emotional connection she experiences whilst weaving her tapestries. The repetitive rhythm required becomes a form of meditation which underscores her practice. In the end, her works stand as evidence of her movement and labour, her thoughts and decisions, and her everyday life.'
- Aerial Morallos-
'Our world has been in a perpetual state of change since its very conception. But never in my life has the world felt so volatile than in current times. There has been a relentless chain of events whose impact has reverberated on a global scale. Environmental catastrophes are surging alongside a global pandemic that is also occurring in conjunction with the uprisings for racial justice in America. Collectively, people are feeling overwhelmed and helpless by a tide of rising chaos that is building towards some inevitable breakdown. The creation of this body of work was a response to this experience. It was also an outlet to channel all my anxious energy into. Using recycled timber I created a series of structures that embody a sense of instability. Each form appears to be on the verge of collapse or spiraling into an implosion. The arrangement of the wood suggests some external force propelling its movement. It was an energetic and immediate process that marked a change in my artist practice and self.'
