Over more than 20 years the Alister Spence Trio have built a distinctive world of sound, gaining recognition for their ingenious compositions and magnetic live interplay.
The trio has strong national and international reputation: with performances including Tokyo International Jazz Festival, Montreal and Vancouver International Jazz festivals, and Vivid Festival Sydney (curated by Brian Eno, 2009).
They have been twice nominated for an ARIA Award (Best Jazz album 2004, 2007), and an APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award (Excellence in Jazz, 2018). Not Everything but Enough was voted by Music Magazine, Japan, in the top 10 jazz releases worldwide for 2017.
This trio creates luminous soundscapes that are by turns joyful, energised, dark, lyrical, textured, and endlessly surprising.
Their latest, 2020 release _Asteroid Ekosystem - _featuring Ed Kuepper (The Saints, The Laughing Clowns) on guitar - has received an overwhelming positive response.
'Whatever you want to call it, this is one mighty sonic trip that paints colourful pictures in the mind. … Hard to describe, but Asteroid Ekosystem is both powerful musical statement and the kind of musical gift that keeps on giving.' Noel Mengel, Loudmouth Magazine (AU)
'In a good world we would have come under the magic spell, unfolded by Alister Spence…, Toby Hall…, and Lloyd Swanton.' Rigo Dittmann, Bad Alchemy, (GDR)
Alister Spence- piano, samples
Lloyd Swanton- double bass
Toby Hall- drums, glockenspiel
