Since 2019, Council has commissioned digital artworks for the city's growing public art collection by living contemporary artists working across diverse practices. This approach allows for the artworks to be displayed multiple times across varying locations. This innovative art procurement takes the artwork to the people rather than the other way around.
About the artwork: Dogs of Brisbane
'Dogs of Brisbane' is a flowery, vibrant, funny celebration of the furrier, slobbery-er, barkier citizens of Brisbane. Dog parks are a beautiful feature of our city, somewhere for pet owners and their pups to congregate, exercise, and get into mischief! In this kid-centred animation, we sought to send a knowing wink and chuckle to all of the dog owners of Brisbane and the shenanigans their furry friends might get into!
About the artist: Sophie Beer
Sophie Beer is an illustrator and author living in Brisbane/Jagera and Turrbal land. As a freelance illustrator, her clients have included Google, Disney, Myer, Coles, and many more. She makes books about big issues for small people, and has published with Penguin New York, Hardie Grant Children's Publishing, Simon and Schuster, Walker UK and Australia, and Scholastic UK. When she's not making art or writing, she thinks a lot about books, animals, and equality.
About the animator: Col McElwaine
Col McElwaine is a designer and illustrator currently living and working in Meanjin. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, NBC, NYT, The Financial Times, Taste, Vice, The Big Issue, Coles, NAB, Fullers and more.
