Find creative connections with family and friends in a relaxed gallery opening and workshop at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, developed in collaboration with Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia).
Experience artworks in Ultra Unreal and MCA Collection: Perspectives on place in a fun and relaxed environment while the museum is closed to the general public.
Join MCA Artist Educators and Aspect volunteers for creative activities in the galleries, and head to the studios to get hands-on with some artmaking. You can join a structured activity created by our team or choose your own experience and set your own pace.
This program has been tailored for adults with hidden disabilities and their friends and families to enjoy together.
Some of the adaptions that will be available at the event are:
Sensory adjustments in the gallery such as lowered sound volumes and modified lighting
Relaxed pace and flexible arrival times
Visual Story (click here to view the event Visual Story)
Artworks that are carefully chosen for participant sensory needs
Staff who are trained in disability confidence
Quiet Area
What to expect on the day:
12.30pm: Arrive at the MCA via Circular Quay entrance where an MCA host will welcome you. Take the lift to level 3, register your name at the information desk, and meet our artist educators.
12.30-1.30pm: Selected Level 1 and 2 Galleries will be open for the autism-friendly opening while the Museum is closed to the general public.
1-2pm: The creative studios in the National Centre for Creative Learning on Level 3 will be open for the autism-friendly workshop.
2pm: The autism-friendly gallery opening and workshop finishes.
Places are limited, so book today!
We also now recognise the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyard.
Wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard discreetly indicates to people around you, including trained staff, that you may need additional support, time or understanding. The scheme allows people to choose to be visible when they want to be.
