Anew is a series of artworks representing growth, transition and connection in the form of street banners celebrating the Year of the Rabbit.
From light to dark, the work starts with bare branches and then progresses to a mass of flowers, signifying a dynamic movement towards prosperity. Anew imagines a space that reflects our relationship with nature and growth as Lunar New Year celebrates the first day of spring in the Lunisolar Calendar, dating back to an ancient root centred around agriculture.
This work is part of an ongoing series called the Mother's Bloom, inspired by the artist's mother's online interactions with her communities back home. She sends her photographs of flowers in her garden as a daily digital greeting to family and friends overseas. Using her images as the paint palette, this body of work represents the dynamic network of interconnections in a digital age.
About the artist:
Si Yi Shen is an emerging multidisciplinary artist working with digital media, augmented reality technology and installation, moving between online and offline domains. Her current practice explores diaspora experience of an immigrant in a digitally enabled world. Si Yi creates one of a kind digital work that is beautiful, fun and provocative. She currently lives, works and plays on Gadigal land.
