The Iconic Queensland Cruising Yacht Club, 72nd Annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is Queensland's premier bluewater classic. Attracting entrants from around Australia and internationally it begins on beautiful Moreton Bay, finishing 308 nautical miles north with a public festival event in Gladstone Harbour. One of Australia's largest and most significant yacht races, the Easter event has a rich history steeped in a tradition extending to its inauguration in 1949 and featured just seven vessels. Two yachts had radios while the other five were supplied with pigeons from Brisbane's Homing Pigeon Club to assist with position reporting. Birds were released twice a day. The inaugural winner was Doug Perrins on Hoana, a race record that stood until 1955. A vintage and classic fleet compete behind a Grand Prix contingent. The 2018 race was won by local favourite 100-foot super maxi 'Black Jack'.
Growing in popularity and prestige the Brisbane to Gladstone attracted 226 vessels with 1356 men, women and children in 1998 for the 50th Anniversary event. The start of the Race is live-streamed free for spectator enjoyment of the action from six separate cameras and drones with professional commentary.
