About Dr Catherine Hamlin and her work
Dr Catherine Hamlin was a pioneering Australian surgeon whose work for women with obstetric fistula in Ethiopia continued uninterrupted for more than half a century. No other woman, or man, has done as much to eradicate this preventable, debilitating condition and give these women back their lives.
Obstretic fistula is one of the worst things that can happen to a woman. It is an internal injury caused by unrelieved labour during childbirth. It leaves women incontinent and tragically 93% of women who suffer and obstetric fistula will give birth to a stillborn baby, often after an agonising obstructed labour the has lasted several days. These terrible injuries leave women trapped in a life of pain, shame and isolation.
The Hamlin Model of Care ensures the treatment for women with an obstetric fistula is focus don't just on repairing the injury, but also restoring dignity. Patients coming to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia receive a customised program that includes surgical repair, counselling, rehabilitation and reintegration.
Catherine was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and received numerous international awards and acknowledgements for her dedication and pioneering work.
