Do you love films? Join our free Online Movie Club and chat to other film buffs about different films each month.
We've selected a great line-up of independent or international films for each Movie Club date. The films are all available for library members to stream for free anytime on Beamafilm.
The club is a great way for movie enthusiasts who love to watch and talk about films with a difference. Our City of Sydney Library team will facilitate a fun and interesting discussion about the film, and you'll have the opportunity to contribute to and hear other perspectives.
Movie Club is held on the last Tuesday of the month via Zoom. Before the event, you'll need to install the free Zoom software and on your own laptop, computer or device and watch the movie of the month.
It's free to join the Online Movie Club, however you'll need to book to join the discussion each month and be a City of Sydney Library member. See the dates and films selected for each month below and book in to attend one or all of the sessions.
Bookings for each monthly event are limited and you need to book each month individually. Once you've booked, you'll receive an email with a link to join the Movie Club event on Zoom a few days prior.
Movie Club dates and films
29 Sept: Orlando (PG), directed by Sally Potter
This film starring Tilda Swinton and Billy Zane is loosely based Virginia Woolf's novel _Orlando. _The story is a journey through time, of someone who lives for 400 years, first as a man, then as a woman.
27 Oct: Silence (MA), directed by Martin Scorsese
An adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel about 17th century Portuguese missionaries who embark on a perilous journey to Japan to find their missing mentor. If caught they must renounce their faith or face a prolonged and agonising death. Starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson.
24 Nov: Short Term 12 (M), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton
The story is told through the eyes of Grace, a 20-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr.
23 Feb: About Elly (PG), directed by Asghar Farhadi
A gripping mystery unfolds when Elly suddenly vanishes from a retreat in the Caspian Sea while holidaying with old friends from Tehran. Starring Golshifteh Farahani, Tarananeh Aliddosti and Shahab Hosseini.
30 Mar: Clouds of Sils Maria (MA), directed by Olivier Assayas
A film star comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself while starring in a revival of the play that launched her career. Starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz.
